There are times when you wish to have the screenshot captured from the desktop or from some particular window. Though the native PrintScreen function lets you do it, it is not of much use when it comes to capturing the videos or specific parts of the screen. There are various softwares out there, which do this job for you. One such is ScreenCamera.
ScreenCamera is basically a virtual camera that allows you to easily record and share the sceenshot.
The program supports most of Windows versions, including XP and Windows 7. The installation is pretty standard involving few clicks.
Though I feel the appearance of the software looks a bit outdated, it pretty much does the job for you. The software has a preview window which shows you real time preview of the to-be captured image/video. The User interface is pretty simple and serves most of the functions, you would hope for. You can choose which Window you wish to capture, whether you wish to capture the entire desktop screen/part of it or if you wish it to follow the mouse. You can choose to view only the desktop or Webcam or both. It is interesting to note that the app captures desktop and webcam simultaneously in video chat.
Capturing can be done using the program’s interface or by using a customized key combination. Capturing can either be done as an image file or as a regular video clip. If you choose to capture via the interface, at the end of the capture you are presented with the dialog box, asking if you need to open the image/play the video right away. Pretty useful.
Whats more, the software detects the desktop resolution automatically and sets it as default resolution. You can always manually modify the resolution, if you prefer a custom setting.
You can also set the Frames per second to be captured, as per your preference. You can also select the format of the captured file and set it’s quality.
Selecting higher Frames per Second can affect your CPU performance.
One area where Screencamera finds it’s utility is tutorials or explaining stuff to people. For example, if your friend/client is facing a problem related to a software, you can explain what needs to be done to fix it, by enabling the video capture functionality of the ScreenCamera and share it online right away. So no need of breaking your head explaining things to them! It’s as an excellent alternative to Teamviewer, only better in few aspects!
What’s more even the Audio is recorded. So it can be a great tool for people who upload tutorials to youtube explaining stuff.
Shortcomings
One downside is, the number of formats supported & the quality of the captured image are limited. I did experience lag at times. Also the captured images aren’t that great when it comes to sharpness, of course you can always zoom over a particular area to overcome this shortcoming.
ScreenCamera supports many chat applications like Skype, UStream, Justin.tv, AIM, MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, PalTalk, and CamFrog Stickam. So you can share the photos/videos directly from with in these applications.
The program is easy to use and pretty much serves every function, you would hope for.
