So Gizmodo has got hold of an iPhone 4G (or HD) which was reportedly left by Gray Powell, an Apple Software Engineer. Its driving huge traffic to them, over 30K people have retweeted it and more than 6 Million people have read that article. But the story which Gizmodo is spreading sounds more like a fantasy to me!
Here’s what happened according to Gizmodo (made short by Redmond Pie) :
The story goes on like this: Apple Software Engineer named Gray Powell who is responsible for working on baseband of the new iPhone goes to a bar. Drinks beer, and forgets his iPhone on the stool as he leaves the bar in drunken state. It is picked up by a random stranger who asks around, nobody claims the phone. He plays with it for a bit, thinking it is iPhone 3GS (the phone was wrapped in an iPhone 3G/3GS like shell to disguise it). Next day he wakes up, finds the phone bricked (OS was said to be remotely wiped via MobileMe service). He removes the outer shell and finds something new – the next Apple iPhone. And rest is history!
But this doesn’t sound like a real story to me and since I have read it, my mind is refusing to accept its authenticity.
Perfectly Planned “Leak” by Mr. Jobs to Gain More Hype?
As ithinkdiff points out, few days before Gizmodo got hold of the next iPhone, Engadget also found an iPhone 4G disguised as 3GS from the floor of a San Jose bar. But Gizmodo says Gray Powell lost it at Gourmet Haus Staud. Were te 2 iPhones prototypes? 2 Guys lost it “accidentaly” and then another 2 guys found them?
Take an example of something very special to you which you love more than anything else. It will be hard to believe that you go to party, get drunk and then leave it there. Moreover when you are one of the only few people on the earth who own it then its nearly impossible to beilieve, atleast for me.
So it looks like a much clever strategy made by Mr. Jobs rather than just a “mistake” by Gray.
The Same Old Base Story?
This type of leak is not new. History has witnessed many other stories like this, though they were not much hyped as this one but every time it starts like this :
- Some pictures get leaked on a very popular gadget site and then people go crazy over it. They all start discussing if its real or just a fake model.
- For some days, it dominates the news world and everyone is talking about it.
- Then Mr. Jobs gives a hint about it and in the following days, he announces the product in an “Invite-Only” Event, some weeks before the product will be ready for Shipment.
(Take the example of iPad or iPhone, every other day some leaked pictures appeared on tech Blogs. Everytime, Big Blogs get hold of them first and then on other, relatively less popular. Everyone starts talking about it. Everyone praises its model and Everyone is too curious to get some more scoops)
This time too people started debating whether its a real iPhone or just a fake model. Maybe Apple saw this as the right time to step in and they sent an email to the Gizmodo team asking their iPhone back!
Anyways, atleast the letter has convinced everyone (including me too) that it was a real model.
I don’t know if what I am talking is right but it happens every time when Apple is going to unveil something “BIG” so it feels like its a part of a gameplan.
For Mr. Jobs, the tech world has become a chess-board and he plays the grand-master who is watching everything. He takes steps according to this gameplan and everytime he plays, He Wins.
