As promised by the South Korean giant, Samsung has started delivering Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update to its flagship phone, the Galaxy S III in select countries. The update brings even more smoothness to the device, thanks to Android 4.1’s Project Butter. Other changes include a reorganized settings menu, new notification window, Google Now, re-sizable Pop-up play screen and a couple of other small changes.
Sadly, the list of countries is comprised of a handful of European and Asian countries only and users living elsewhere in the world are out of luck right now. If you’re one of them, you’ve got two options:
- Wait for Samsung to deliver the update in your country
- Flash the update right now!
If you’re reading this page, chances are that you’ve already chosen the second option and here’s our quick guide on how to upgrade Samsung Galaxy S3 to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean XXDLJ4 firmware.
Steps for Installing Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.1 Jelly Bean XXDLJ4 Update
Step 1. The first (and the most important) step is to make a nandroid backup of your phone so that you can always revert back to your backup in case something goes wrong during the flashing procedure.
For those who’re unaware, here’s our super guide for creating a Nandroid backup of Samsung Galaxy S3.
Step 2. Download Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for Samsung Galaxy S3 using the link below. Also, download Odin Flashing Tool and make sure you’ve Samsung Kies installed on your desktop since it is responsible for installing all the required drivers for your phone.
Extract the firmware using WinRAR, 7-zip or any other suitable software and you’ll end up with a *.tar.md5 file. Also extract Odin3_v3.04 to a separate folder; opening Odin directly from the compressed folder might thro up random errors.
Step 3. Turn off your phone and start it into Download mode by simultaneously pressing volume down + home + power buttons. Then, connect it to your PC/laptop using an USB cable.
Step 4. Next, start Odin. If all the above steps have been followed properly then a box willlightup blue indicating that you can proceed ahead.
Click on PDA and choose the *.tar.md5. Ensuring that only Auto-Reboot and F. Reset Time are ticked on the let, hit the Start button!
The flashing process will take a couple of minutes to finish. Upon completion, your phone will automatically restart and you’ll be able to enjoy the deliciousness of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean on your Galaxy S3.
Please note that the phone will take some time while booting up for the first time after flashing and so, don’t worry if your phone is stuck on the Samsung Galaxy S III logo for a while.
Troubleshooting

A) Something went wrong during the flashing process. You have two options: go back to step 3 and re-flash the firmware OR restore your Nandroid backup.
Q) I’m stuck in a Boot Loop (i.e., the boot process is repeating itself indifinitely)
This shouldn’t happen generally, but you can easily solve it by turning off your phone and starting it in recovery mode by simultaneously pressing Volume up + home + power buttons. Next, do the following operations:
