Sometimes we come across a scenario where we have a video which we shot on our mobile or handycam vertically upside down. Of course, none of us would want to watch the entire video upside down or sprain the neck trying to get the correct view. It’s now, you find out changing the orientation of videos is not as straightforward as it is for images.
Well worry not, we have got you covered. Here is a quick way to change the orientation of your video in the most commonly used media player – VLC.
Step By Step Guide
Well, there are plenty of guides in the VLC forums to do so, but most of them are not updated to reflect the changes made in VLC 2.0.x release series which takes a slightly different approach to rotate your videos, leading to generation of this small guide.
How to Flip a Video in VLC
- Open the file in VLC, either via VLC itself or from Windows Explorer. (duh)
- Under Tools menu, click Effects and Filters option.
- Now you will be greeted by a window shown below. Select the Video Effects tab.
- Now select the Geometry tab, select Transform and choose the desired change. In this case we want to rotate our video which was shot vertically, hence we choose Rotate by 90 degrees option.
If you want to flip a video which is inverted, you need to select Rotate by 180 degrees. If you just want to flip the video vertically or horizontally, you cane select the Flip Vertically or Flip Horizontally option respectively.
I should make a point here that unlike in images, the orientation changes you make to the video’s are applicable only during the playback and are not persistent. If you want to flip or rotate a video permanently, you will have to re – encode the video. Luckily majority of the popular applications like Windows Movie Maker or Format Factory support this as an option. Do share your opinion about this tutorial on “How to Flip a Video in VLC”.
