It is often handy to have that important file which you just downloaded synced to Dropbox. But some of us (like me) are too lazy to do that manually. How about a neat Google Chrome extension that just does this job in a single click? Download to Dropbox for Google Chrome does that exactly.
Installation
Looks like almost all Chrome extensions need to access to your “data on all websites” which definitely shows Google’s shabbiness when it comes to handling user privacy. Anyway that is some food for discussion for another time.
All you have to do to get started with this extension is to sign-in for the first time with your Dropbox account and give access to the extension once you install it.
How to use it?
The idea here is simple. All you have to do is to right click on any downloadable file which you wish to save to Dropbox and select Upload to Dropbox. The file will be automatically uploaded to your Dropbox account.
By default the downloads are stored in the /Apps/Downloads from Chrome folder of your Dropbox account. You can specify the location in the extension settings though
You can access your downloads to Dropbox simply by clicking on the extension’s icon next to the omnibar. You can open it in a separate tab as well. If you have Dropbox installed on your local PC , it will start syncing your downloads as soon as the extension finishes uploading the files remotely.
Performance and Caveats
The extension is pretty stable and I did not encounter any stability issues with any given type of files being uploaded to Dropbox. Though the extension does have few minor annoyances. First off, large files especially take a while to sync, so you might be better off using this extension for rather small files. Secondly there is no upload speed or time remaining indicator leaving it to you to guess the time required to finish the uploads to Dropbox.
Having said that, this is extension rather fits in the “must have” category for Google Chrome given the amount of utility it provides considering the penetration of Dropbox among the masses and the extension’s ease of use and robustness despite some minor quirks which will be hopefully resolved in the future updates.
