The iPhone 5 remains one of the best smartphones in the market despite now being almost 18 months old. As a result, despite Apple officially discontinuing the device, it is no surprise to spot the iPhone 5 in the wild. However, as famed and revered as Apple’s build quality is, some of the iPhone 5s out there seem to have fallen exception to the rule.
Several iPhone 5 owners have complained about the power button on the iPhone 5 giving up on them and not working all of a sudden. This was an issue that had plagued the iPhone 4 too, and to their credit, Apple replaced all of them without a speck of issue. The case remains exactly the same here as Apple has initiated a replacement programme for the iPhone 5 with malfunctioning power button. Apple has admitted to some of the devices, especially those that were manufactured through March 2013, to have power buttons that are less than perfect. Apple wrote on their official website:
“Apple has determined that the sleep/wake button mechanism on a small percentage of iPhone 5 models may stop working or work intermittently. iPhone 5 models manufactured through March 2013 may be affected by this issue.
Apple will replace the sleep/wake button mechanism, free of charge, on iPhone 5 models that exhibit this issue and have a qualifying serial number.”
How can you replace your iPhone 5?
It is worth mentioning, that if the power button of your iPhone 5 is in perfect condition and working, you are not eligible for this replacement programme. Also, none of the models, apart from the iPhone 5 are eligible.
If you have an iPhone 5 and the power button is anything less than perfect, then you need to head over to Apple’s official website here and enter your Serial Number in the field that is available on the page. Once you have entered the key, the database will inform you whether your device is eligible for a replacement or not. If it is, you can go ahead and take the device to the nearest Apple or simply mail it to them and get a replacement. Apple has clearly indicated that it takes up to 4-6 days to complete the process.
Those in the US and Canada will be able to utilize this programme starting April 25th while for the rest of the world, initializing date of the programme would be May 2nd, 2014.
