Installing/setting up anything is only a part of the story,Maintenance is where the real headache lies. Especially true in case of servers, websites and cloud storage. And how would you know when your system fails? Obviously you can’t afford to spend 24 hours keeping a keen eye to see whether or not your system is functioning well. IN comes the role of Monitoring services. Many service providers exist in this space. I will be reviewing Monitis All-in-One Monitoring Platform in this post.
To start off with Monitis is a Paid service but it also offers a free service in the form of Mon.itor.Us. Monitis offers various plans, additionally you can create your own custom plan based upon your needs.
More info about the plans can be found here.
Soon after the logging in you are greeted with a pop-up asking if you would like to set up new Monitoring Service. Its pretty easy to set-up a monitoring task.
Monitis All-in-One Monitoring Platform helps you with:-
Applications monitoring, Network monitoring, Cloud monitoring,Websites monitoring, EMail Servers monitoring, Firewalls, VoIP, Databases, Domain Name Servers, Routers, Web Servers, Desktops from end user perspective.
Of these, for a common webmaster with shared hosting, website monitoring will be of utmost importance. And those with a dedicated server, well, you have a lot to choose from.
Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, SNMP are supported.
Moreover, Various protocols like HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, SSH, PING, TCP, UDP, SIP, MySQL, DNS are also Supported.
An interesting feature it also helps you monitor your cloud on Amazon S3, Amazon EC2 and Rackspace.
You can choose the monitor Check Interval from 1-60 mins. It allows you to monitor from various locations like US-MID, US-EST, US-WST, UK, Panama, Germany, Australia, China, Netherlands, Spain, Singapore and a Custom Location.
You can choose when and how you would like to be notified. One thing I found discouraging was the SMS cost. You need to buy SMS credits. which is at almost $0.25 per sms
Apart from Monitoring you can also run a Load Test but it is chargeable. This is one area where I feel Monitis needs to do better to keep up with the peers in this space not just with the costing but also with respect to the capacity. We can add a max of only 2000 virtual clients (others provide 5000 or even more).Frankly, I found the charges a bit expensive.
One feature that I loved is Web-Map. It provides the required info in a nut-shell.
Monitis offers a few tools to make things a lot easier for its users.
Rest of the interface is pretty easy to work with and they have tried to keep it clean and compact.
Here is a video explaining how to deal with the interface:-
Over all i am quite satisfied with Monitis, I will give it 6.5/10.
It is really worth trying out and if you wish you can try out their service/features for free for 15 days before ordering a package.
Feel free to share your experience with Monitis.
