Google is set to kill the Nexus line of smartphones in the coming year and replace them with a premium line of devices called Android Silver. It is pretty much confirmed that the Nexus 5 will be the last Nexus smartphone of a series that began with HTC manufacturing the Nexus One. However, the future of the Nexus line of tablets is not very clear. So far, we have seen three Nexus tablets with two generations of Nexus 7 and one generation of Nexus 10. After relatively poor showing of the Nexus 10, it was thought that Google will concentrate only on Nexus 7 with it being of the perfect size for reading, gaming and multimedia consumption.
However, looks like there will after all, be a new Nexus tablet and it is more of a successor to the Nexus 10 than Nexus 7. Android Police has confirmed the details of the next Nexus tablet, and this time it would be made by HTC. The device will without a doubt be the most advanced Nexus tablet and will bring a new form factor. So far, the Nexus tablets have either been 7 or 10 inches, but the new Nexus tablet from HTC, codenamed Volantis, is expected to bring an 8.9 inch screen with a resolution of 2048×1440.
The tablet will bring a stereo speakers on the front and an all Aluminum body construction. Looks like HTC is going with the tried, tested and appreciated design philosophy of the HTC M7 and M8 here. The tablet will bring 2 GB Of RAM and will be available in 16 or 32GB versions. Powering the tablet will be the desktop class processor from Nvidia called the K1. The Volantis is expected to weigh almost 418 grams. The device image that has been made available by Android Police though, does not seem to match the description of the device. The tablet here looks very much like the Nexus 5. We fail to see any Aluminum construction or the dual front speakers. This may just end up being a case of mistaken identity after all.
According to the report, the tablet will go on sale in Q4 along with the new and the latest Android update.
