Micromax Mobile has announced a strategic partnership with CyanogenMod Inc to service the software side of things for their latest line of products, which they are calling ‘YU’. The brand would be run parallel to the Micromax moniker and would focus on the services as well as the software side of things for Micromax. ‘YU’ would be officially made available only online as it caters to the demands and needs of a younger and more progressive youth-centric audience.
The ‘YU’ line of devices would be lead by Rahul Sharma, the co-founder of Micromax Mobiles as the brand in itself will be the subsidiary of Micromax Informatics. As a result of the partnership with CyanogenMod, the Micromax phones under the ‘YU’ brand will come with CyanogenMod OS installed on top, which, while being very close to stock Android, adds a few interesting features like themes, customizations, DSP controls etc. CyanogenMod without a doubt is the fastest growing third part ROM community in the world, and it is obvious why a move like this will definitely interest the developers. So far, the likes of OnePlus One and Oppo have brought CyanogenMod officially on board, though ROMs for pretty much every single device exist on the website. It is being reported that both Micromax and CyanogenMod have been in a dialog to make this news official for about a year now.
Rahul Sharma, added his comments on the deal by saying:
YU will be a game changer brand in India. Disruption has to be the name of the game and with this partnership, we are raising the bar again and rewriting the rules. As YU is envisioned to build an ecosystem of connected devices and offer a differentiated user experience, we will engage directly with consumers.
We strongly feel that CYANOGEN is the right partner to help us deliver a differentiated experience in the mobile ecosystem, we are together committed to challenge the limits of possibility and create a new world.
While, no date for the release of the first CyanogenMod powered Micromax device has been revealed yet, the press information says that an announcement for the same may be as close as December in 2014.
