There was little surprise in Barcelona as HTC announced its latest flagship device, the HTC M9 at a press event. The device has been leaked all over the internet in the past couple of days and there was very little left to imagine by the time the press conference had begun. The challenge before HTC was to improvise on what was definitely the best looking smartphone last year and serve the dish hot among the speculation that Samsung was up to something really good this time around. HTC decided to stick to the same design on the M9 as that of the M8 other than a few cosmetic changes here and there while Samsung radically stole the thunder with a total rework on their flagships from the previous years.
The HTC M9 was first out of the closet and the device looks exactly like the M8 other than a few minor changes. The power button has been pushed to the right while the single tone metallic language has been changed to a dual tone with one color on the back and a slightly different one on the side. For example, the silver unit will have golden accents on the side.
The display is a 5 inch 1080 P unit and the phone is powered by a 2 GHz Snapdragon 810 SoC and you get 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal memory with an option of further expansion. HTC has done away with the dual camera setup at the back and you now just have a 20 MP unit on the back and a 4 Ultra Pixel unit on the front. The boomsound speakers have been made louder with a 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound and the device runs Sense 7 with Lollipop out of the box. The Sense 7 update is expected to hit other HTC One device later in the year too. The HTC One M9 will be available in four colors including pink, gunmetal gray, silver and golden.
Once HTC was out of the way, next up was Samsung with the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge. Both the devices boast exactly the same specification, other than the fact that the S6 Edge has a dual curved displays on the sides. Both the phones have a metallic and glass chassis which frankly looks really beautiful. The phones are iPhone 6 like from the bottom with a single speaker grille, micro USB port in the middle, 3.5 mm headset jack and a microphone. The display is a 5.1 inch unit with a 2K Super AMOLED display.
The Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are powered by an in-house manufactured, Exynos 7420 octa-core chip (2.1GHz quad core+1.5GHz quad core) and has a bundled 3 GB of RAM. The phone will be available in 32, 64 and 128 GB configurations with expansion slot available. The Galaxy S6 has a 2550 mAh battery, while the S6 Edge has a 2600 mAh battery, though in both the cases, it is non-removable. The camera on the back is a 16 MP unit with OIS and the front facing snapper is a 5 MP unit. The devices will be available in 5 different colors.
Both the HTC M9 and the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are expected to go on sale around next month, and concrete details on pricing for neither of them is known so far.
