One of the features we really liked on the iPad was the ability to lock the rotation of the device using the silence toggle. You can use the toggle to either silence your device or lock the rotation as per the requirement that you would have. This feature though, was never present for the iPhone and you had to go through the procedure of opening the Control Center to lock the rotation which was a bit of a pain. It is nice to see that Apple is looking to unify the features across the devices and with the introduction of iOS 9, one of the features that has been added is the ability to use the silence toggle as a rotation lock. This is especially useful with the likes of iPhone 6 Plus where the entire springboard can rotate, and therefore, needs rotation locking more.
If you are running the Beta version of iOS 9, then you can follow the simple steps below and change the functionality of your Silent Switch on your iPhone.
Go into Settings app from your springboard of the device.
Under Settings, find General.
In General, look for ‘Use Side Switch For’ and under that you will see the option of either using the switch to Mute your device or lock the rotation. Select the option that you wish to use and you are good to go.
Obviously, you can come back and change the setting right from here in case you feel you need the switch for silencing the device more often than locking rotation. Nevertheless, it is a good option to have and one of those little features of iOS 9 which may have gone un-noticed.
