How to Easily Mute a Tab Playing Music on Chrome

December 7th, 2015 by

We have all been there, playing music, headphones on and working away to glory. But what happens, if you have 20 odd tabs open and you need to play your music on Youtube and also listen to a seminar or a conference. The easy task is to simply close your Youtube tab, and let the one of your seminar play along. But what if you are doing something really important on Youtube and cannot afford to close it? You will then need to go to the Youtube tab and manually turn the volume of the video to Mute. This is not the most convenient of things to do, especially as you will need to come back to the Youtube video and manually turn the volume up when you are done watching the seminar and need to listen to the joy on Youtube.

Mute tabs-Chrome

All of this can be really hassle-free and literally job of a split second if you are running the latest build of Chrome browser on your computer. On our Macbook, at the time of writing this post, we are running 47.0.2526.73 build of Chrome and the feature we will describe below works perfectly well.

Recently Chrome has inbuilt the capability, where you can mute or unmute any particular tab when you are browsing rather than having to turn off music manually from each playing window. This also significantly reduces the effort for you to finding out which exact tab is playing the music and gets things done fast in general. To do this, all you need to do is, to go to the tab you feel the music is coming from, and right click on the tab. For Mac users, this will be a two finger tap. You will see a menu rise up, which will have an option to Mute this tab. The music will continue to play in the background without disturbing you, as the playback has not been paused. Once you are done with your work, you can repeat the procedure of going to the tab and right clicking, and you will get the option of then Unmuting the tab and enjoying the music like it never disappeared.

This is a really handy shortcut that not a lot of people seem to realise about Chrome, and one that can actually potentially save you several minutes during a day, making it a lot more productive.
