When the iPhone 6s was announced, along with the upgrades in the internal hardware of the phone, the feature that took all the headlines was 3D Touch. 3D Touch basically is the adaptation of Forced Touch on Apple Watch or the new Retina Macbook Pros on the iPhone. It basically means that your iPhone is now capable not just of recognizing the touch but also its intensity, which acts as another input mechanism for you. The expected behaviour of an application, as a result, is different, when you just touch on it versus when you use 3D Touch, where you press on a component hard.
However, 3D Touch needs to be implemented by the developer on their applications individually and thus the places where we see 3D Touch being used is not an awful lot. Despite this, there are a few instances where 3D Touch is a book, this is where we feel the feature really comes into its own.
Updating and Searching for Apps
If you have not set your phone to auto-updating applications in the background, then opening the App Store can be a daunting task. The sheer number of updates available is just mind boggling. But, 3D Touch on the icon of App Store, and you can not just search for an application easily, but also give the command to go ahead and update all the apps, in the background to your iPhone.
Selecting Wi-Fi Network
While you can easily turn on Wi-Fi and turn it off using Control Center, what it does not allow you to do is to latch on to one particular network. If you are in an area where you have multiple networks, with each specific for one activity or the other, you are going to love this feature. 3D Touch on the Settings icon, and you will see the second item in the pop-up list, which will be of Wi-Fi. Simply click on it and you will be taken directly to the Wi-Fi settings on your phone and you can select your network, turn the connection off or use ‘Ask to Join’.
Viewing your Starred Messages on WhatsApp
It can be a bit of a mare finding the starred messages on WhatsApp on iPhone. You will need to leave your chat, go to the Settings Menu and there find Starred Messages to view the messages that are of importance to you. With 3D Touch, this is easy. Simply forcefully press the WhatsApp icon and you will see the pop-up giving you the option to go directly to your ‘Starred Messages’.
Directions to Home
If you have just moved to a new city and have input in your Google Maps, the location to your Home and Work, long pressing on the Google Maps icons, you will have the option to be directly directed to your home or office. This saves the time that Google Maps otherwise takes to load and locate your current location and then you manually enter the location details.
Creating a New Contact
So far, you needed to enter in a number, and then press the plus icon on the left located on the dialler, and then select that you want to add a new contact or to an existing contact and then add his name. It’s almost like a four step process. With 3D Touch, you can just press the phone icon hard and you will see a pop up saying that you can add a new contact. It directly takes you to the form of adding a new contact where you enter the name and number and you are done with. Makes your effort half.
