How often do you wish your family or friends wouldn’t call you up or text you when you’re traveling alone? No matter how many times you’ve traveled alone, and know your way around the route you’re on, there’s always someone making a check on you. Sure, you know they’re just concerned about your safety and want you to return home safe. But that doesn’t stop you from getting irritated.
Well, there’s a simple solution. Share your location.
Duh, I hear you saying. Every messaging app lets you do that.
Here’s something different.
Trusted Contacts is an app from Google. It does exactly what it says. It’s all about sharing your location with contacts you trust the most.
How it works.
Unlike the location sharing feature in a messaging app, Trusted Contacts is a one-time setup. You create a list of your trusted contacts and that will let them access your location anytime from anywhere.
You don’t have to manually share your location, and they don’t have to call you or text you.
Instead, if you’re out alone, your trusted contacts just have to just click on a button. And immediately, you will get a pop-up message asking for your permission to share your location. If you choose to, the app will share your location.
However, unlike other messaging apps, even if you choose to not share your location, Trusted Contacts will share your location with your trusty contacts anyway. That’s an extra layer of security that the app packs.
What you need tech-wise.
The app is currently available only for Android on the PlayStore while the iOS app is under construction.
Before you begin…
As soon as you log in, even before you create your trusted contact list, you will have to enable location history and sharing on your device. This is a common thing and you probably already have it on anyway.
If you’re concerned about giving away your location to Google, that would be a problem. (Though Google may not be interested in following you around.)
On the web too.
Your trusted contacts don’t have to download the app to check your location. You can share your location through a secure shareable link via email. It’s also a one-time setup and your contacts can click on the link from the web to know where you are at any point.
Trusted Contacts is a worthy app to have on your phone. But if you don’t mind sharing your location manually, WhatsApp would do too. It’s your call.
