Smart Switch Helps Transfer Contacts and Data From Windows to Samsung. Here’s How.

As Windows 10 devices touch their one year mark, more people are in the market for new mobiles. Seizing that opportunity, Samsung has increased its compatibility so that Windows 10 users can switch to a Samsung device easier than before.

Samsung’s official switching app, Smart Switch, introduced support for Windows 8.1 devices last September. Following that path, the app now supports Windows 10 as well.

What you can transfer.

Even though there are a few restrictions to the data you can transfer, you can still get the most important of what’s on your old phone and an SD card. Here’s a list of transferable data.
  • Contacts
  • Calendar (only the content from your device)
  • Messages
  • Photos
  • Music
  • Videos
  • Call logs
  • Memos
  • Alarms
  • Wi-Fi
  • Wallpapers
  • Documents
  • App Data (Only if you’re transferring to a Samsung Galaxy S6 or higher device)
  • Home layouts (Only if you’re transferring to a Samsung Galaxy S6 or higher device)


You can switch to any Samsung device that’s running the OS versions Android 4 through Android 7.

Note that if you’ve just purchased a Samsung Galaxy S7/S7 edge, the Smart Switch Mobile app comes pre-installed on the device. You can find it under Settings -> Backup and reset -> Open Smart Switch.
