Facebook is a social phenomenon these days, if you haven’t heard of it either you are a saint or you live in a cave; chances are even a cave man will have a FB account. Recently Facebook was valued at 50 billion dollars, and critics said it to be crazily overvalued.
But I personally feel the value to Facebook is much more; how can you estimate the value of personal data of billions of people stored with Facebook? Its priceless! Be it the Monarchy of British, President of USA or any other famous/notorious personality; everyone does have a Facebook account. No doubt Facebook has helped connect many lost friends, but given the tremendous potential it has, if it falls into wrong hands, the consequences can be disastrous.
Please bear in mind that I am very much a fan of Facebook and respect all the good things it has done for us, but in this post I am trying to bring to light the not so good aspects of it. In one of the recent interviews Assange rightly called Facebook an ‘appalling spy machine’. Couldn’t agree more. Here are few points in favor of it.
1. Privacy Concerns
Though most of Facebook users aren’t aware of the disastrous consequences that a possible compromise could have, this seems to be the most sensitive issue that needs immediate attention. After all, all the data ranging from photos to the day to day instances in your life is stored with Facebook.
2. Accounts Hacked & Misused
There have been innumerable cases where in, the accounts have been hacked and misused. Misused by sending obscene images/texts/updating status or stealing confidential info.
3. Source of Misunderstandings
Misunderstandings in a number of ways. Some due to glitches in the technology(messages not reaching the recipient), some due to a message posted on the wall, some due to spam links spreading any nonsense by your name, etc.
4. Fake Profiles
Whatever the motive behind creating the fake profiles; revenge, jealousy or fun; people have suffered because of it, not just in the digital world but very much in the real world.
5. Effect on Children
The lack of effective filter to above 18 stuff is a major concern, letting them easy access to various evils. Need I mention the other obvious bad effects of lack of field play, spending less time with family, effect of studies, etc?
Flesh trade and Dating
Facebook has become the media of choice through which the pimps approach the to-be clients sparing them the trouble to call or meet secretly. About dating, while I don’t have any objection to it, if both the people in question are adults; there have been instances where adults have lured under 18 girls/boys into physical relations.
I believe each one of us has been a victim of spam on FB. The recent Osama killed photo/video spam is an excellent example of it. Just within hours the spam was fast circulating. The spammers are very smart these days and make most of every opportunity. This may seem an extremely pessimistic version of Facebook but most of the concerns need an immediate attention. Feel free to share your opinion.
