Here is the basic path: on uPhone, you can claim a free eSIM trial through the Test Flight free eSIM offer or through the referral-based free eSIM route, then install the QR code on iPhone or Android, activate it, and cancel within the stated trial window if you do not want to be charged.
Free uPhone routes
The uPhone free eSIM referral program gives a free 1 GB eSIM after 10 qualifying referrals. uPhone says the referrals must come from people who clicked your unique link, created an account, verified their email, and completed a purchase of an eSIM plan that meets the minimum spend. uPhone also says the reward is valid in 150+ countries, lasts 30 days from activation, and there is no limit to how many reward eSIMs you can earn.
- Referral route: create a free uPhone account, get your unique referral link from your dashboard, and share it.
- Reward trigger: 10 qualifying referrals.
- Reward delivery: contact support through your dashboard after you hit the threshold; uPhone says the team sends the free eSIM within 24 hours.
The trial route is the one tied to the phrase claim a free uPhone eSIM trial. uPhone says the free trial gives a real 1 GB data eSIM for any of 100+ countries, free for 3 days, as part of Test Flight, and you must enter a card when you start the trial membership. uPhone says you can cancel within 3 days for no charge; if you cancel after 3 days, uPhone says you are charged $9.99 for that month.
Compatibility and setup requirements
uPhone says its eSIMs are delivered by QR code and can be installed on iPhone or Android. Its setup page says to open iPhone Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM, or on Android open Settings → Network, or Connections, → SIMs → Add eSIM, noting that menu names vary by brand.
For Apple devices, Apple's international eSIM guidance says you need an iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, or later, plus a wireless network provider or worldwide service provider that supports eSIM. Apple also says the iPhone must be connected to Wi-Fi or a hotspot, although in some countries or regions eSIM-only iPhone models can activate without Wi-Fi.
For Pixel phones, Google's Pixel eSIM guidance says to open Settings, then Network & internet, then SIMs, then Add SIM, and tap Set up an eSIM. Google lists supported Pixel phones as Pixel 3a and later, including newer foldable and tablet models in the support article’s device list.
How to install the QR code on iPhone
uPhone says the QR code is emailed after you claim the eSIM, and its iPhone instructions are to open Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM and scan the code. Apple’s international eSIM page adds that the iPhone should be connected to Wi-Fi or a hotspot before activation in most regions.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Cellular.
- Tap Add eSIM.
- Scan the QR code from uPhone’s email.
Apple’s page also says that, for travel use, some carriers and service providers offer prepaid plans that can be purchased from their websites or apps before travel, and that these plans may be activated digitally with a QR code or carrier app.
How to install the QR code on Android and Pixel
uPhone’s Android instructions say to open Settings → Network or Connections → SIMs → Add eSIM, then follow the on-screen prompts to scan the QR code. Google’s Pixel eSIM guidance gives the Pixel path as Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add SIM → Set up an eSIM.
- On Pixel: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add SIM → Set up an eSIM.
- On other Android phones: Settings → Network or Connections → SIMs → Add eSIM.
uPhone says the QR code is delivered by email within seconds after payment on its paid plans, and its trial page says the free trial QR code is emailed after you claim the trial eSIM.
Activation and use
uPhone says the plan is ready to use after scanning the QR code, and it says you can install the eSIM before you travel and activate it on arrival. For its trial, uPhone says the free test eSIM is a real data eSIM and that it is active only while the membership is active or in trial status.
Apple’s international eSIM guidance says that, when using more than one line, you can choose Travel eSIM Only or Travel eSIM and Current eSIM, and Apple notes that if you use both lines, the travel eSIM is used for data and roaming fees may still apply to the home line.
Cancellation deadline and plan differences
The trial cancellation deadline is 3 days. uPhone says cancel within 3 days and you pay nothing; cancel after 3 days and you are charged $9.99 for that month. uPhone also says the free test eSIM is one-time only and valid while the membership is active or trialling.
The referral reward works differently: uPhone says the free 1 GB reward eSIM is available after 10 qualifying referrals, is valid for 30 days from activation, and has no stated limit on how many you can earn. The referral page does not set a cancellation deadline because it is not a trial membership.
uPhone’s site also describes broader uPhone eSIM options as country, region, and global plans, with fixed data or unlimited data choices and validity from 1 day to 365 days on its main plan pages.
