eSIM QR Code Not Working? Complete Troubleshooting Guide

When an eSIM QR code will not scan or activation fails, the fastest fix is usually to check the code itself, then switch to manual entry, and only then move on to device, carrier, or account checks. Apple’s and Google’s official setup pages both provide a manual activation-code path when QR scanning does not work, and uPhone’s troubleshooting page adds practical checks for unreadable, expired, and already-used codes.
Start with the QR code itself
If the code is blurred, damaged, low-contrast, or displayed on a screen with glare, scanning may fail. uPhone recommends cleaning the camera lens, using good lighting, and scanning from about 15–25 cm away. If the code is on another screen, reducing screen brightness slightly can help. If the QR code will not scan, use the manual activation code shown beneath it instead.
- Clean the camera lens.
- Improve lighting around the code.
- Adjust distance and try again from roughly 15–25 cm.
- If scanning from a screen, lower the screen brightness a little.
- Use the alphanumeric activation code beneath the QR code when manual entry is available.
Use manual entry when scanning fails
Apple’s setup flow includes a manual path after the QR step. On iPhone, go to Settings > Cellular, tap Add eSIM, then on the Set Up Cellular screen tap Use QR Code, followed by Enter Details Manually. Enter the carrier-provided details, tap Next, then tap Set Up eSIM and finish with Done after activation completes.
Google's Pixel eSIM guidance also supports manual activation. On Pixel 9a, go to Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Set up an eSIM, then use Enter activation code if scanning does not work. On Pixel 7 and some other Pixel help pages, the same flow appears after Try these troubleshooting steps.
Check whether the QR code is expired or already used
uPhone says many eSIM QR codes expire 24–48 hours after issue, and expired codes need to be reissued by support. Its troubleshooting page also says to contact support for a new QR code if the original code was already used. If the code was sent as part of an order email, install the eSIM immediately after purchase when possible.
- If the code has expired, request a re-issue.
- If the code has already been used, request a new QR code.
- If the email is missing, check spam or junk folders and the account order page.
Confirm the phone and line are eligible
Apple says to verify that the device supports eSIM and that the carrier offers eSIM service. Apple also says to make sure the device has an active Wi-Fi connection during setup, that the software is up to date, and that the carrier can verify the eSIM profile is available for activation. If the QR code is not clearly visible or is damaged, Apple says to contact the carrier to verify the profile and try activation again.
uPhone also notes that if a device shows eSIM not supported, the phone may be carrier-locked or not eSIM-compatible. Its iPhone guidance says to check Settings > General > About > EID; if no EID is shown, the device does not support eSIM. If an EID is present, uPhone says to contact the carrier to unlock the device.
When the carrier rejects the activation
If the carrier rejects the code or the profile will not activate, Apple’s guidance says to verify the eSIM profile with the carrier and restart the device before trying again. That page does not document a more specific carrier error code checklist. uPhone’s troubleshooting page says activation problems can also come from a carrier lock, and its guidance points users back to support for a replacement QR code when the current one has expired or already been used.
- Confirm the carrier has issued an active eSIM profile for the line.
- Restart the phone and retry activation.
- Check for device lock status if the phone is not accepting eSIM service.
- Request a reissued code if the carrier says the original profile is no longer valid.
If setup still stops partway through
Apple says a working setup depends on a supported device, carrier eSIM service, a current software version, and an active Wi-Fi connection. If activation still fails after the QR code, manual entry, and carrier checks, Apple’s instructions are limited to retrying activation and contacting the carrier. Google’s Pixel pages likewise route users to the eSIM setup path in Settings and the Enter activation code option when scanning does not work.
Do not remove a working line just to troubleshoot a new one. If the line is already active, the documented fallback is to use the manual code path, confirm carrier eligibility, and ask the carrier or provider to reissue the code when the QR has expired, been used, or cannot be scanned.
